REPLACING TIMING CHAIN
Timing chain is pre-stretched and does not have
to be replaced before 50,000 km (30,000 miles).
If chain noise is not normal, check chain tensioner
piston 11 31 090.
Remove distributor 12 11 060.
Remove upper timing case cover 11 14 100.
Set piston in cylinder 1 to TDC.
Indicator tip on timing case cover faces TDC
mark on pulley.

Remove upper and lower timing case cover
11 14 120.
Open lockplates.
Remove sprocket.

Installation: Install chain that dowel pin (1) is
bottom left.
Bore in sprocket must align with threaded bore
and cast tab.

Take bottom end of timing chain off of sprocket.
Swing timing chain out of the slide rail forward
to the right carefully.

Vehicles after change point in 1982 REPLACING TIMING CHAIN
Remove upper timing case cover 11 14 100.
Remove lower timing case cover 11 14 120.
Set cylinder no. 1 to TDC.
Take off sprocket.
Caution!
Don't run engine after removing timing chain.
Lockplates can be omitted.

Installation:
Install chain that dowel pin (1) is at bottom left when tapped bores are perpendicular
to the engine.
Cylinder no. 1 must be at TDC.
Tightening torque*.

Remove timing chain from bottom sprocket and guide it out of guiding rail
carefully.
