Vehicles before change point in 1982 REPLACING ENGINE WITH AN EXCHANGE UNIT Remove engine 11 00 050. Identification of exchange on crankcase: 1 = Type designation 2 = Exchange 3 = Manufacturing month 4 = Manufacturing year EL = L-Jetronic fuel injection The following parts must be tansferred: collector with intake necks, fuel injectors, return line, branch flange, oil pressure switch, starter, alternator with holder, TDC position transmitter, water pump, power steering pump bracket, engine mount brackets, exhaust manifold, distributor with ignition cable tube, clutch bell housing, clutch, flywheel and wire harness for engine. Important: If car has an automatic transmission, guide bearing in crankshaft has to be removed. a) Version with Needle Bearing: Pull needle bearing off of crankshaft with Special Tool 11 2 010. Improtant: Apply special tool that pulling hooks grab behind the needle bearing. | |
b) Version with Grooved Ball Bearing: Pull out grooved ball bearing, cover, felt ring and end cap from crankshaft with Special Tool 11 2 010. Apply special tool that pulling hooks grab behind the grooved ball bearing. Improtand: Check diameter of torque converter shaft. Install adapter sleeve (1), if converter shaft diameter is 21 mm (0,827´´). If converter shaft diameter is 32 mm (1,260``) install without adapter sleeve. Adapter sleeve (1) has to be installed in place of the grooved ball bearing. | |
Install engine. Adjust ignition timing 12 11 004. Adjust engine idle speed and CO level 13 00 054. Run engine to operating temperature. For engines, whose cylinder heads have not yet been tightened (watch label on valve cover): Tighten cylinder head bolts by a torque angle of 25±5° (depending on engine temperature) with Special Tool 11 2 110. Note: Cylinder head does not need to be tightened again after driving car 1,000 km (600 miles). 12 11 004 13 00 054 | |

Drive in supplied oil dipstick guide tube - see 11 43 101. Transfer parts from old to new engine. Add engine oil***: Important! If car has an automatic transmission, remove pilot bearing in crankshaft - see 11 21 571. Install engine.
