Vehicles before change point in 1982 CHECKING POWER STEERING PUMP AND FUNCTION OF POWER STEERING A) Power Steering Pump: Always check the pump delivery pressure first. Detach pressure line (1) at power steering pump. Connect pressure line (2) of pressure tester on pump in its place. Important: Never reuse escaped oil. Installation: Tightening torque¹). Place pressure line in clamp. ¹) See Specifications
Connect pressure line (1), detached at pump, on pressure tester 32 4 000.
Close valve (3). Open valve (4) and bleed hydraulic system with engine running at idle speed 32 13 006. Engine must be at operating temperature. Close valve (4) max. 10 seconds after bleeding. Open valve (3) and read pressure value. Measured pressure value could be less than specified pressure¹) on data plate of power steering pump by max. 10 %. 32 13 006 ¹) See Specifications
Pressure¹) not reached: a) Check tightness of drive belt. b) Check valve piston for dirt, replacing valve piston if necessary. Important: Only install valve piston of same tolerance group. Threads on valve piston face spring. Don´t disassemble valve piston. If max. pressure¹) is still not reached, replace rotor, impeller and cam together. ¹) See Specifications
B) Power Steering: Raise car. Limit steering stop by 1/2 to 3/4 steering wheel turn prior to reaching the final stop (use piece of wood or similar item).
Run engine. Pull steering wheel against final stop with a force of 100 N (22 lbs.) for about 5 seconds. Read pressure from pressure tester 32 4 000. Repeat same test at right lock. If measured pressure values are less than max. pump pressure¹), replace steering gear. ¹) See Specifications
C) Checking Mechanical Play in Steering (pressure point adjusted) Hold steering drop arm in straight ahead position with Special Tool 32 4 040. Loosen clamp for this purpose and lift out wires.
Open valve (4). Close valve (3). Run engine having operating temperature at idle speed. Open valve (3). Read through-flow pressure value.
Paste strips of paper on steering wheel hub and casing upper section. Turn steering wheel anticlockwise carefully until pressure gage shows a rise in pressure of 1 bar (14 psi) over through-flow pressure value. Mark position of steering wheel hub at (A). Turn steering wheel clockwise carefully until pressure tester 32 4 000 shows rise in pressure of a bar (14 psi) over through flow pressure. Again mark position of steering wheel hub at (A). The total distance traveled must not exceed 7 mm (0.275´´). Check coupling, if 7 mm (0.275´´) are exceeded. If this test does not indicate cause of trouble, replace the steering gear. Remove pressure tester 32 4 000. Fill and bleed hydraulic system 32 13 006. 32 13 006 |
