REPLACING CRANKSHAFT - Crankshaft Removed -
Remove woodruff key (1).
Pull off sprocket with Special Tool 11 2 000.

Identification of Crankshaft:
Mark on threaded end.
BMW 630 CSi one cut
BMW 633 CSi two cuts
Transfer needle or grooved ball bearing 11 21 571.

Identification of Crankshafts:
Standard size¹) with one red or blue dot of
paint on side of counterweights.

Ground crankshafts are identified with stripes of paint.

Important: Crankshafts are tenifer treated and
may only be ground at the factory.

In the repair sector each bearing journal is to be
fitted with one red and blue bearing shell regardless
of the crankcase and/or crankshaft color code.
Make sure that all red or blue bearing shells are
always in the same plane, i.e. installed facing up or down.
If the crankcase color code can´t be found and
therefore only the crankshaft´s color code is
known, install uniform bearing shells according
to the color code of the crankshaft.

Important: Only use bearing shells (2) with oil
pockets for BMW 633 CSi cars.

Check bearing play¹) with Type PG 1 Plastigage.
a) Measure each bearing separately.
b) Bearing surface dry of oil.
c) Crankshaft at TDC for measuring.
d) Bearing cap at specified torque¹).
e) Don´t turn crankshaft while measuring.
f) Read bearing play¹) on width of flattened
Plastigage using scale supplied.

Lift out woodruff key (1).
Pull off sprocket with Special Tool 11 2 000.
Installation:
Heat sprocket to max. 200° C (390° F) for installation.

Crankshafts are available in two versions due to the main bearing journal
tolerances.
- Double classification: red/blue
- Triple classification: yellow/green/white
The version installed in the car originally should be used again.
It is absolutely necessary to measure the bearing play, see 11 21 531.

Crankshafts are surface treated and therefore may only be reground in the plant.
Reground crankshafts are marked with stripes of paint.
