REPLACING SHOCK ABSORBER
Important: When replacing only one shock
absorber, always use one of same make.
To know whether a shock absorber has to be
replaced, check an installed absorber with a shock
absorber tester or a removed absorber in a shock
absorber testing machine¹).

Remove and install coil spring 31 33 100.
Pull holder (1) and extra spring with outer tube
off of piston rod.
Installation: Check extra spring and outer tube,
and replace them if necessary.

Unscrew bolts with Special Tool 31 3 160.
Installation: Tightening torque¹).

Pull out shock absorber (1).
Installation: Drain old oil from spring strut
tube (2).
Pour in engine oil¹) before installing new shock
absorber.
Important: Store shock absorbers standing
upright.

REPLACING SHOCK ABSORBER
FOR FRONT SPRING STRUT
Important!
Always replace a shock absorber with one having the same code (K)*.
Shock absorbers must be checked with a Shock Tester in the car or in a shock
absorber testing machine after removal, to determine whether or not they have to
be replaced.
Also refer to Service Information 37 02 83 (177).
BMW M 635 CSi:
Always replace shock absorbers in pairs.

Remove spring strut assembly - see 31 31 000.
Clamp spring strut and Special Tool 31 3 000 in a vise.

Place Special Tool 31 3 116 on the mount.

Compress coil spring with Special Tool 31 3 111.
Important!
Pins on mount and Special Tool 31 3 116 must fit in openings.

Lift off cap.
Unscrew self-locking nut with Special Tool 31 3 170, counterholding on the piston rod.
Installation:
Replace self-locking nut.
Tightening torque*.

Take off washer (2).
Screw in Special Tool 31 3 115 the whole length of threads.
Release and remove the spring compressor.

Installed Order:
1 Self-locking nut
2 Washer with small diameter
3 Mount
4 Insulator
5 Washer with large diameter
6 Cap
Inside curved surface of insulator (4) faces the mount.

Lift off upper spring retainer with rubber ring and coil spring.
Installation:
Check upper and lower rubber rings, replacing if necessary.
Ends of coil spring must bear on shoulders in lower and upper spring retainers.

necessary.

Installation:
Tightening torque*.

Pull out shock absorber (1).
Installation:
Remove old oil in spring strut tube (2).
Pour in engine oil** prior to installation of the new shock absorber.
Engine oil is needed to carry heat off of the shock absorber to the spring strut tube.
Important!
Gas pressure cartridges on the front axle must not be installed with oil.
Also refer to Service Information of Group 37.
Only store shock absorbers standing upright.
If shock absorbers are stored laying down with their piston rods run in, this would lead
to a rattling noise when installed again.
Remedy:
Store shock absorbers standing upright with their piston rods run out at room
temperature for 24 hours.
