Vehicles after change point in 1982 INSTALLING REAR CHILD SEAT BELT (SYSTEM) Important! Installation is only permitted in cars which are fitted with rear seat headrests. Because of better access it is recommended to install belt behind front passenger's seat.
Unscrew bolts and take out rear seat.
Unscrew bolts and nuts. Remove trim panel with headrest.
Unscrew bolts and remove cover. If applicable, pull off radio speaker wires.
Mark and cut out opening for belt strap. A = 70 mm (2.756"). B = 15 mm (0.591")
Cut out foam rubber and reinforcement plate. A = 70 mm (2.756") Bend remaining sheet metal (1) at cutting point slightly. Deburr all cut edges (to avoid damage on belt).
Cut out trim on hole provided in tray. C = 22 mm (0.866")
Pull shoulder belt strap out of length control: Install automatic reel. Installed Order: 1 = Bolt 2 = Automatic reel 3 = Plastic guide 4 = Spacer 5 = Tray 6 = Washer 7 = Nut Tighten self-locking nut from trunk. Installation: Tightening torque*´ Install cover on automatic reel. * See Specifications
Install cover, connecting radio speaker wires if applicable. Pull belt strap through opening of trim panel and bolt down trim panel. Checking Automatic Reel: 1) Pull out belt - automatic reel should wind belt automatically. 2) Pull out belt suddenly - automatic reel should lock.
Mount lower belt strap (1) together with standard seat belt (2). Installation: Tightening torque*. * See Specifications
Install rear seat. Opening (1) must engage in holder (2).
Install child seat. Locate with help of headrest.
Connect shoulder belt strap with belt strap of automatic reel. Extremely Important!! Insert shoulder belt strap as shown in figure. Only in this manner is there a tight connection with the belt strap of the automatic reel.
Engage insert (1) of child seat belt in standard seat belt lock (2) - loud click should be heard. Adjustment to Size of Child: 1.) Do not twist belt straps. 2.) Lock belt lock of child restraining system (loud click). Open lock by pressing down on "PRESS" button. Belt tongue will be ejected out of lock automatically. 3.) Pull on left and right waist belt strap ends until belt fits snugly (belt lock in approximately center position). 4.) Tighten shoulder belt straps until they rest on shoulders (like suspenders). Note: If car is involved in an accident, which exceeds parking damage, the fastened child restraining system must be replaced with the standard belt lock.
Checking Automatic Seat Belts: The automatic reel has three independent activating systems for the locking effect. The first activating system should lock the real when driving fast in curves, driving in tight curves, when car rolls over, during sharp braking or by impact. This activation is accomplished with a ball (1). To check, seat must be set upright and both hands placed on steering wheel in supporting position. Then apply brakes fully while driving at a road speed equal to twice walking speed (road must be dry). The seat belt should lock. The second activating system is for additional safety and is controlled by inertia mass (2). If reel locks when pulling out belt suddenly, this system is also okay.
The belt should retract automatically as far as possible when released. It could happen that the last section of the belt will have to be guided to the door beam by hand. If this last section is not wound, there could be a weak or broken return spring (3) and/or excessive friction in the belt guides. An unusable seat belt or a seat belt worn in a serious accident should be destroyed immediately after removal to guarantee that it cannot be used again. The automatic reel does not have to be serviced and must not be opened.
The belt stopper is the third system and is provided to prevent the film winding effect occurring when the reel is locked and with strong deceleration. In so doing an eccentrically mounted friction roller (1) ist moved against connector (2) and locks the belt.
The automatic seat belt has to be replaced when the mounting bar (6) is bent or the stirrup is distorted in area (7). The stirrup must still pivot after mounting bolt has been tightened.
When replacing a seat belt also replace the lower strap. In the case of belts integrated in seats an impact could deform the lower strap stop on the seat rail. Never attempt to straighten the seat or seat rail. Straightened lower straps must be replaced.
To fasten a belt the tongue (16) should insert easily and with a loud click in lock (17). When pushing in "PRESS" button (18) the belt tongue (16) should be ejected from lock (17) by spring force. Replace seat belt when lock trim is missing or damaged.
If the plastic cover in the opening for the belt above the anchorage bar (16) has traces of wear, the seat belt must be replaced.
Belt Straps: Only clean belt straps in a luke-warm soap solution or a commercial fine laundry detergent. Never clean belts chemically or dye belts. An automatic seat belt must be replaced when there is - creasing (see picture), - unraveling, - pinches,
- tears and/or cuts, - melting (see picture) or - damaged seams on end of belt in area of holding or pivoting part. The improve belt retraction the belt can be sprayed with universal belt spray, HWB No. 8122 947 005. This will reduce friction, especially on the stirrup. |
