REMOVING AND INSTALLING ALTERNATOR
Important: Only disconnect wire between battery
and alternator when engine is stopped.
Disconnect battery´s plus and minus leads when
charging battery in a car with a charger.
When arc welding connect ground terminals of
welding equipment direct to car´s part being
welded.
Disconnect ground wire at battery.
Detach wires on alternator.
Red B +
Blue D +

Remove tensioning bar mounting bolt.
Loosen upper suspension and lift out alternator.
Installation: Drive belt should give under thumb
pressure applied midway between two pulleys
by 5 to 10 mm (0.197 to 0.394´´).

Caution!

Disconnect the battery - it is located in the trunk of M 635 CSi cars (see figure).

Only Engine S 38:
Unscrew nut and loosen the hose clamp.
Pull off plug.
Lift out air cleaner with air flow sensor.

Only Engine S 38:
Disconnect coolant hose.
This will cause approx. 2 liters (4 pints) of coolant to run out of a cold engine.
Installation:
Pour in coolant*.

Unscrew nut and pull out bolt with the tensioning wheel.
Take off the drive belt.
Swing alternator away from the engine.

Unscrew and lift the fan cowl.
Unscrew nut and pull out the bolt.

Unscrew leads on connections B + (term. 30) and D + (term. 61).
Unscrew ground lead.
Installation:
Tighten drive belt - see 12 31 299.
